My Special Guest: Charles Seabrook. He writes the weekly nature diary, 'Wild in Georgia', in the Sunday Living section of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution.
Cut Flower and Christmas Tree Preservative:
What you will need: 1 gallon of water 2 cups light corn syrup 4 teaspoons chlorine bleach 4 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar (optional)
Mix the solution together. Bleach and vinegar produce harmful vapors when mixed, to avoid this, add them to the water first.
You can substitute the corn syrup with 7-Up or Sprite but it has to be the regular kind NOT diet. Trees don't care about being fat, they like sugar!
You must mark or lable your bottle 'DANGER', something that let's you know not to drink it! Keep out of the reach of small children and don't let your pets drink the water either!
You can store your solution for up to two weeks in the fridge or up to 5 days on your counter.
The next time you pick flowers from your garden or around the holidays for your cut decorations, give this mixture to your friends. That way they can enjoy your gift for much longer.
